Hello!
I am waiting for pictures from Bender Realty to show what the beach looks like. The pool is up and going and I plan to start running auctions again. If you would like to book any dates for 2006, just send me an email. Thanks, June

How are things since Hurricane Katrina? Is the pool up and going? How does the beach look?

Just got home from Gulf Shores. Sand was piled so high in front of the Sandpiper. They are about 10-15 foot high sandpiles. You cannot see the ocean while standing at the pool. The elevator was broken when we got there, but was fixed in a day or 2. I found out that the same contractor has the contract for the entire beach. They work in teams, i.e. 2 dump trucks, 1 backhoe; i bulldozer, and another bulldozer with a scoop on front. The guys seem to work very coordinated; but I could see no rhyme or reason to how they piled the sandpiles up. I guess someone knows. It was beep-beep-beep all day long; but it will be nice when finished. They have sand screeners, and all sand is screened many times. They screen it, piled it up, then screen it again, and take to another area. It is clean. Makes you feel good that they are paying this much attention to screening because I had read in the paper where they were finding items from New Orleans at time in Gulf Shores. The beach was soooooo clean. No seaweed, etc. There were few birds. It looked as though most of the natural material around the Sandpiper had at least one leaf coming out green. It will just take time. In fact some of the little things by the pool leafed out while we were there. The weather wa beautiful; 78, 79, 80, 81, even 83 one day. There were seveal Louisville families there. We tried some new restaurants this time; like the Gulf Shore steamer, DeSotos, Franco Italian. Our favorite is still Zeke's. Starting Nove 1 they have halfprice menus betw3een 4-7. I have become friends with the lady next door from Birmingham. She told me that they were there in August and how beautiful it was. She thinks the 2 properties across the street will be orn down, and a high-rise probably built. I talked to a lady from the Gulf Shores Chamber of Comerce at a deli who told me they are going to enhance the entrance to Gulf Shores at 59 with a Promanade, trying to make it more family oriented. With little shops, etc. They have contracted withh Starbucks for that area. She said the Commissioners like local eateries, not chains; so they can sort through the requests. Hooray for Starbucks. I found a little internet coffee shop. We went to the library to use the internet. 30 minutes for free. The lady also indicated there would be a boardwalk of some type on the beach. She also told me Oranage Beach is making a Rive Walk. The new furniture pieces were welcomed especially the tied table in the blue bathroom. Ideal for blow dryers, curling irons, etc. Of note--I coulkd not find a sink strainer for the sink to hold water. All in all we enjoyed the 2 weeks very much. Have marvelous tans. (Now we have to cover them up with coats, etc; but that's OK). We did leave a day early, due to the bad weather coming on Tuesday toward Louisville. Glad we did. We did the beat time ever. Left at 9:15 CST; Got to Louisville around 8:30 EST. We weent to Atlanta before going on to Gulf Shores, so we have had quite a time encountering the time changes while we've been gone.

The guys hauled away all of the trash in the lot next door while we were there. Happy Holidays!

Hello,
I haven't heard details on the damage as of yet. Bender's website is reporting that the pool is fine, but the landscaping in the courtyard suffered quite a bit of damage. There were also several windows blown out. I will keep you updated as I learn further details.
Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers. Our thoughts and prayers are for all of the others who were so devastated by this hurricane.

Hello!! I was just wondering if you had heard anything about how The Sandpiper fared in Katrina's fury. Keep me up-to-date because I was wanting our family to spend our fall break in Gulf Shores. Thanks.
